Forbidden books 1st AP

For my Forbidden books class we learned about being a "gadfly" which means to annoy someone to get information and there opinions. We learned how Socrates was a man who went around and was a acted as a gadfly to try to figure out the societies ideas and belief. it worked very well trough this process he confused people and made them contradict themselves. What me and Dylan did is we talked back and forth on the topic of if safe spaces are safe enough.

Chevy: You hear about what happened in Florida last week?

Godwin:  Yes, I have heard, it was a horrific incident.

Godwin: We must make public spaces safer. I am tired of hearing people getting hurt where they should be safe. It's ridiculous that people can't go out in public without worry of getting hurt. They happen way too often don't you think?

Chevy: These horrible tragedies like Florida only happen once in a great while, but for the most part, public spaces are safe.

Godwin: What about the people in Columbine and other such places, even the incident at the concert in Las Vegas? These things actually happen quite often actually. People need to be able to defend themselves.

Chevy: I still don't think people should carry guns because they could accidentally shoot someone. We should still wait for the police to arrive so they can solve the problem.

Godwin: But the police didn't stop the shooter until it was too late. The average response time for police across America is 10 minutes. That's a lot of time considering what is going on. Why would a police be any better than a citizen?

Chevy: I really don't think just any person with no training could take down a guy with an assault rifle.  I feel like it would just cause more victims. The normal assault rifle has 30 bullets to shoot, and I know all those bullets won't hit your target and they could hit other things.  

Godwin: I see but you have to keep in mind that we would train them, I agree that nobody without training should be in public with a gun, but that won't be the case. Haven't you heard of training?

Chevy: I suppose that if they were trained then it wouldn't be any worse than police plus they would be right at the seen. When I think about it I think that a bystander who has the proper trainer is good to have a firearm because a person committing a crime wouldn't suspect it which also adds the element of surprise to the table which is definitely an advantage.

Godwin: There are multiple examples of people with guns saving lives such as the Jeanne Assam who killed a gunman that was attempting to shoot into a crowd of thousands exiting a church. This would have been an event the size of the Florida shooting but nobody heard because someone with a gun stopped the shooter. Did you ever hear that story?

Chevy: Wow I never heard that story, I guess there really are people that have guns for the right reason. I guess you've been right all along and guns in the right hands really can save lives.

Godwin: Thanks for talking to me Chevy! I have to go catch a plane, to England! Thanks for talking to me today and I hope you take my words and apply them to your everyday life.

Chevy: No problem Godwin I really appreciate you helping to explain your point of view to me. I really look at this topic differently and I hope that I could use your technique with other people. I really learned a lot from this discussion.

In conclusion I learned about how a gadfly operates in a dialog and how he or she tires to convince you of the other opinion by solid facts supported by evidence. I thought this AP was pretty interesting I kind of enjoyed being opposed to people having guns which is a side I usually don't take but I kind of went into the mind of someone who feels that they are unsafe and bad.

I am studying colon cancer for my disease class.Colon cancer runs in my family, there is a trend of people having it. Through this, I have learned how this disease affects a whole line of people I know and how it is genetically passed down over time. I will go over in this research paper how it affects the person, from their physical health to their daily life. Also I will go over its treatment and how prevalent it is in the population.

People who eat a lot of gluten and salt and have other unhealthy diet choices have a higher chance of getting it but is is also a genetic disease so you would have to have it in your blood line. Stress physical and mental, like anxiety can bring it on.  Also African- Americans have a greater chance of getting it. Colon cancer is not transmissible because it is genetic and passed down. It is a multifactorial disease because it is genetic but environmental factors trigger it. This is a polygenic diseases. This disease affects the colon and large intestine which is in the digestive system. It also affects the immune/lymphatic system. You get stomach ulcers in your large intestine, maldigestion and chronic diarrhea. It affects their daily life by restricting their diet, and their daily activity they have very little energy and must rest a lot because of the diaraha they have to limit their activity and where they can go. Extreme cases involve surgically removing the colon and rerouting the body waste into a colostomy bag. This is very disruptive to every part of a person's life and work. My patient only had ulcerative colitis and it didn’t progress to cancer she is on daily drugs for the rest of her life and has a 1 in 8 chance of having the gene for cancer but hopefully would prevent this. The daily use of mercaptopurine suppresses the immune system and makes the patient more susceptible to other diseases.              

Before we go over the  interview, I want to inform you a bit about colon cancer. Some symptoms are bloody stool, diarrhea,stomach pain,and extreme loss of energy. Some words that you should know are colonoscopies, sigmoidoscope, mercaptopurine and, Crohn's disease. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, especially the colon and it is associated with ulcers or polyps in the stomach. Mercaptopurine medication is used for cancer and autoimmune diseases - specifically it is used to treat lymphocytic leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia also Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. Sigmoidoscopic is an examination of the sigmoid colon by means of a flexible tube inserted through the anus. A colonoscopy is a procedure in which a flexible fiber-optic instrument is inserted through the anus in order to examine the colon. It finds pre-cancerous polyps so they can be removed.

I interviewed a person who has experience with this disease, she had ulcerative colitis and all the symptoms that would point to cancer. She has a close family member that has the disease and had to get a colostomy. Her grandfather died from it.  Some things this person said was, it is inconvenient and you have to be careful what you eat but you can manage it. This disease happens in a greater degree in the Eastern Hemisphere where they eat salty foods and eat soy which has a lot of salt which may contribute to the disease. It seems to be present in the UK where they eat a lot of meat. “My grandfather and aunt had it, I have a 1 in 8 chance of having it”. You can learn to change your lifestyle to be healthy and not to be a worrier and be careful about diet. Pay attention to your gut. If you’re in a flare, huge loss of energy and pains in gut. It can't be prevented but it can be managed through colonoscopies, diet, and an anti cancer drug. You can see how this affects the daily life of a “normal” person. I really think that it would be difficult emotionally to know that you have a disease like that in your bloodline and just have to hope that you don't get it. knowing it's like a 1 in 8 chance given my genetic history. Also, I think it would be difficult to watch what you eat all the time because if you want a quick snack you have to make sure it won’t causes issues with your system.

TRL Mapping AP Employment on the South Side

Employment in Chicago’s South Side

For this semester I was in a class called thin red lines. We didn't really learn about geography it was more like demographics of certain things being mapped like people being affected by gun violence of hunger in a certain area.





Past


For my first map about the 1910 to 1950 employment I printed out a map of the south side and included things from the past. Some of these things I added where the stockyards of chicago which employed 40,000 people. Another thing I included was the steel mills which employed 10,000 men. The number on the maps are the different wards. I choose red because I thought it draw more attention to the viewer and shows where the main focus of the map really is. The red area mean areas of high Black employment. Notice how number 41 is not colored in at all meaning this area was low on employment compared to the others. This map stretches from navy pier to 138th street in the south side so it cover quite a lot of space. I had to draw the stockyards out of the map because it was right on the edge of it and isn't included on the printed one. one, it was the source of a lot of jobs back then.





The steel mills were also a large job source but the unions kept a lot of Black people out.





Present


The second map I made was a map of the present. This map is cut off at 79th street because there was no need to include the stockyard and the steels mills because they are no longer operational. This map shows the percentages of current joblessness in the south side the orange areas are the areas with the most joblessness. It is recorded that these areas have 60 percent to 80 percent joblessness. The yellow shaded areas show only 50 percent of 60 percent. I choose these colors because I felt like orange draws more attention than yellow and again that brings people's attention to the main areas than the other ones. It is interesting to see how the job amount went down over the years in some certain areas such as 41. This was originally not a great spot for a job now it is a lot better than some of these other nearby areas that were originally a lot better. This is a growing problem but I think it will improve over time.





Future


The final map I made was of a predicted future for the south side which could really change it for the better. The major changes needed are to create jobs by getting businesses to open and to train the local people to be able to work there.The red dots are employment training center which already exist so that could play a major role in helping people find jobs.If they started training people.





The orange strip is an enterprise zone that would be on 63rd street and would have beat cops walking around to make people feel a lot safer so businesses would move in there. This would make people life a lot easier knowing that they can shop or go to the bank or any type of daily business without having to fear the possibility of getting robbed or anything like that. I think that is what is going to make people go there for the needs have police stationed on that strip to patrol it. Also we can give the business a tax cut if they higher from that area.





The green dot is the Obama center which is going to need people to work there. Also we need people to build it so there is more jobs.The Obama center should also have internships to train young people how to work.


The blue on the map is a light industry zone right now it is just cement and fields but we could put a steel mill there and increase the amount of jobs for people in that area. The reason I choose the red sharpie for the Job training center is because I think that is the first step to completing all of this. Because if you have a good enough training center these people can pretty much get any job that is on that enterprise strip or in the steel mill.

"Over the stars"

For my STEAM class I took Rocket Science. Overall it was quite interesting and I learned a lot. We took a few FE's for this class. One of them was to the Adler Planetarium. That was fun and very informational. Another FE we went on was to the Science and Industry Museum. We spend about 40 minutes in the space room and looked at the rockets and the shuttles that went into space and got recovered. We also learned about people such as galeena balashova.

For my third AP for population I researched about nature reserves. Pretty much what population is it is a STEAM class where I learned about different species and math that relates to it such as combination and permutations relating to different traits about them. I already know about  forrest preves I have went to many of them. I also researched some reasons why they need to be here.

Snowy Owl and Kudzu vine

For my second AP for population class it was about an invasive species coming into a new land. my example was a Kudzu vine going to move to the environment of the owl. Through out my research I learned a lot about this vine and how it is taking over the US southern states. We also learned about how the habitat can effect the species in many ways. We also learned about some math components that can be factored in to this, such as mean median mode range first quartile  third quartile and box and whisker plots


In North America, snowy owls are found during the breeding season from the western Aleutians in Alaska to northeastern Manitoba, Northern Quebec and Northern Labrador in Canada. In the winter, they can regularly be found in the northern United States. So obviously they are well use to the cold and the snow. Both the male and the female defend the nest from predators, sometimes by distraction displays. Males may mate with two females that may nest about a mile  apart. Some of the owls stay on the breeding grounds while others migrate.




It started out in Asia and spread to the southern states and grew over a lot of tress and didn't let them get sunlight which is obviously an essential to any tree. Last spring break I went to Louisiana, you could see it over everything in the bayou. Kudzu originated in Japan, where the ecosystem kept the vine from becoming a problem and it is thought to have been introduced to China and Korea. There are multiple ways to control this vine such as biologically, chemically and some people have a small heard of sheep to control this. 



So let's say this vine evolved a trait to live in cold weather and travel up into northern US and Canada. The first thing it would effect is every type of tree nesting/ hibernating animal and cause them to have to find a different home. For the snowy owl it will mostly effect is prey such as mice and small varmint. The reason this is is because the snowy owls nest is in the ground not in any tree. But the mouse hibernates in the tree and if this vine kills the tree then the mouse will possibly die as well making it harder to find things to eat for the snowy owl For my 3 different organisms who I think would survive in this habitat is choose prairie dog, black bear, and swift fox. I choose the prairie dog not for its predatory traits which it does have more for it survival traits. Such as it is very good at digging and tunneling through the ground and it is very quick so it can escape its predators. For food it eats bushes which there are some in that climate such as sedum.  For my second organisum I think the black bear would be able to survive. They are already north but not as north as the snowy owl. So my guess is that they have experience with the cold already.Besides that they are very good hunters and quite fast. There food is primarily berries and insects if they wanted to they would eat a fish or mammal. They are opportunistic eaters. Finally I chose the swift fox. The swift fox is a good choice because of its speed. With that it can escape predator or go after prey. Its food is rabbits, prairie dogs, squirrels mice and other varmit.
