In  our STEM class Cure we are learning about the many different ways to treat someone with a certain illness . For example, if you have a headache, would you be better off taking advil or tylenol? In this class we also learned about thing like the lock and key mechanism which is a metaphor for how your body fits substate into the enzyme. For this Action Project, we had to create a box showing one aliment and showing three ways to aid it. I choose headaches because they are very common and I wanted to learn more about ways to cure a headache. I choose three different compounds for relief, Advil, Axert,and ginger. Theses are all ways to treat a headache even though one is over the counter the other is prescription and the other one is available for anyone to get. 

Advil

Ingredients:  ACTIVE INGREDIENT (IN EACH CAPSULE) Solubilized ibuprofen equal to
200 mg ibuprofen
(present as the free acid and potassium salt) *nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

Intended effects: Pain reliever/Fever reducer

Instructions: 1 tablet every 4 to 6 hours while symptoms persist.

If pain or fever does not respond to 1 tablet/caplet/gel caplet, 2 may be used

Do not exceed 6 tablets/caplets/gel caplets in 24 hours unless directed by a doctor.

Side effects: Drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, vomiting   

Axert

Ingredients: One tablet has carnauba wax, cellulose, FD&C Blue No. 2, hypromellose, iron oxide,
mannitol, polyethylene glycol, povidone, propylene glycol, sodium starch glycolate,sodium stearyl
fumarate and titanium dioxide.

Intended effect : It  eliminates or reduces the symptoms of migraine attacks including headache,
nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Instructions :If the headache is relieved after the initial dose but returns, the dose may be repeated
after 2 hours. The adult dose ranges from 6.25 to 12.5 based on severity of headache

Side effects : Stomach pain, heartburn,nausea,vomiting,constipation, and diarrhea.

Ginger

Ingredients: The smell and flavor of ginger result from volatile oils that compose 1-3% of the weight
of ginger, primarily consisting of zingerone, shogaols and gingerols with gingerol as the major scent
compound.

Intended effects: A general medicament for common ailments such as nausea.

Instructions: there are many ways to ingest ginger such as ground ginger root,Powder Tablets,
Capsules, Tea bags and liquid teas,and Essential oil.

Side effects: Heartburn diarrhea, and general stomach discomfort

I am in a class called drama right now. We read a play called The Taming of the Shrew. This was about the patriarchal society  which means that the men had control and the women could do much if they were wronged. If the women acted up they were called shrews thich meant like an annoying person who didn't need to be recognised. So for my AP I wrote a sonnet to petrictio questioning him of why he acted in such a way to kate.

In our class 'ure we are learning about different diseases and other problems but we have one main focus, how to cure them. Throughout this course already I have learned a lot. We went to the Museum of Surgical Sciences and we looked around and found out things like the first surgeries and the ancient ways for solving sickness. For this Action Project we had to choose a surgery and report on it. I did enucleation, which is the removal of eyes.  I did this because I found this to be really captivating, something as fragile as an eye and to just remove it. I found this very interesting and I wanted to know more.
 

AP #2 Forbidden books The Outsiders

Intro

For my Forbidden books class we learned about censorship and how it affects society. Some books we read were Fahrenheit 451, The absolutely true Diary of a Part-Time Indian, and the Outsiders. At one point all these books were banned. We also learned about the types of people to ban these types of books and that was really interesting it see their reasoning behind this. One of our FEs we meet this author who got her book banned from prisons. She told us how she was shocked about how this happened and her book was in a list of thing which were a lot more offensive. The other FE we went on was to a bookstore called Women and Children First. this was a kind of left wing bookstore that had a lot of books about gay rights and other stuff like that. One big thing that was banned was a book about Donald Trump that he didn't want published and they sold it there. I found this class to be very interesting.

The Outsiders 

Drug abuse and violence. It's interesting to think that's something so common to see on TV nowadays can cause a whole book to be banned. This book, The Outsiders took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1965 but this is never stated in the book. The main character Ponyboy, is attacked by a group of Socs, which are the greaser’s rivals. These are the the the rich kids who life on the west side. The Socs, gang up on Ponyboy. Then they threaten to slit his throat.One night Ponyboy and his brother Darry (who kind of raised him) got into a big fight and Darry slaps Ponyboy and then Ponyboy runs away. When he was out he ran into some Socs in a park and got into a fight with them. Johnny who is a friend saves ponyboy from being drowned by killing one of them. After this they go to a guy named Dally who gives them money and a gun. He also told them that there is a church that they should hid out in. they stayed there for a few days until johnny decided it would be better if he just turned himself in. On the way out the church caught on fire and there were some kids in there. These kids were not greasers or Socs they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. So Ponyboy saves them but gets knocked out doing so. Johnny killing the Soc raised the tensions a lot higher and both sides were just waiting for something to happen.then darry the guy who helped johnny and Ponyboy hide robbed a store. The police ended up killing Darry because he wouldn't surrender.Also johnny died in gang fight which caused Ponyboy to pass out. When he woke up he had an agreement to stick with his brother Darry.When Ponyboy goes to school for his paper he writes this story. The theme to this book is to stay loyal to your brothers and the close ones around you and to not betray them. This book was considered to be controversial because it contained violence and drug and alcohol abuse and kids that came from broken homes. This book was banned for reasons that are common themes of books and TV shows now.


This book has been very controversial. George Washington Elementary a school is Eleanor West Virginia banned this book in 2001 because it promoted gang activity, and they didn't want to show kids this in a book and for them to think that it is ok. This book’s diversity mainly covers socioeconomic boundaries because of the Socs and the Greasers. The Greasers don't have money and the Socs do. “We're poorer than the Socs and the middle class. I reckon we're wilder, too”(Hinton 4 ) But there is not real evidence of racial diversity in this book. Over the years alot have books have been banned by the government to keep the people from not knowing what that author believes and thinks about a certain concept. The first book that was ever banned was in 259 B.C. by The Emperor of china about Confucius' writings. Some books have been banned because of racist reasons like the book The Color Purple. There are some books about the whole idea of book banning and how it could affect the future. Fahrenheit 451 is a good example of a distorien time where books have been banned. Even books like the Breakfast Club were banned because of use of drugs. These were banned because the government thought it would be better if the general populous didn't have these books for many different reasons.     


Next, some people found some content in the book to be offensive. There is quite a bit of violence in this story. One instance is when Ponyboy is jumped when walking home from the movies by himself. A knife was held to his throat "How'd you like that haircut to begin just below the chin?"( Hinton 6). This was said to Ponyboy by a Soc with the knife against his neck. This type of violence is bad to promote to a young audience and could definitely be seen as too violent for some. Another example of this book being offensive is the talk of drugs and alcohol. Everyone smokes in the book and it is mentioned quite a bit and a few get drunk also. There are references to getting “smashed” or ”stoned”. "When we stomp the Socs good, me and Stevie here are gonna throw a big party and everybody can get stoned. Then we'll go chase the Socs clear to Mexico" ( Hinton 93). Some people didn't want this book promoting these habits of smoking or drinking to a teenage audience who would read something like this. Even though it is around a lot today they had more censorship back in 1960s. Most of this was about the socio economic differences between the Socs and the greasers. A quote from SE hinton is "I think The Outsiders was meant to be written, and I was just meant to write it" I could imagine her frustration after having her book banned because she is so sure that this book had to be written which is a cool way to think of it.

Finally, my opinion on the matter at hand. Truly that this book should not be banned. Every book should be able to be read if the reader wishes to. No one should tell someone what someone can and cannot read it should always be up to them. Someone can understand why some people thought that the violence and the alcohol and drug abuse were a reason to ban it. If one were a parent would they make this book be an example of the type of things that do not promote a successful lifestyle ? Another reason why this book should be banned is that teens should be exposed to these things at an age when they are mature enough to make the right decision. Now censorship is not a good thing but common sense is. No one wouldn't make a 4th grade class read this but anyone in 8th grade of above can handle this and can learn a lot though this.

So basically this book shouldn't have been banned. Although it talks about some mature content like drugs, alcohol ,and violence it shouldn't be not read. If one does not want to hear about any of those topic it is simple as just not reading it. Every book should be able to read if wanted to.

Nicotine Addiction

For my second AP for Disease class I researched nicotine addiction.
Through this class we learn about different mental issues such as autism or addiction.
I learned alot about nicotine addiction through this project such as that cigarette smoking kills
480,000 people a year. In this AP I will show you how when addicted the brain craves this substance

Timeline Breakdown

Throughout this project I learned a lot about nicotine addiction. It was really interesting that people get addicted to this in the first place knowe the consequences. It is horrible the damage that it does to your physical health and mental health. It also affects your social life in many ways. If it was up to me this substance would not be legal because it is so harmful.

For my Forbidden books class we learned about being a "gadfly" which means to annoy someone to get information and there opinions. We learned how Socrates was a man who went around and was a acted as a gadfly to try to figure out the societies ideas and belief. it worked very well trough this process he confused people and made them contradict themselves. What me and Dylan did is we talked back and forth on the topic of if safe spaces are safe enough.

Chevy: You hear about what happened in Florida last week?

Godwin:  Yes, I have heard, it was a horrific incident.

Godwin: We must make public spaces safer. I am tired of hearing people getting hurt where they should be safe. It's ridiculous that people can't go out in public without worry of getting hurt. They happen way too often don't you think?

Chevy: These horrible tragedies like Florida only happen once in a great while, but for the most part, public spaces are safe.

Godwin: What about the people in Columbine and other such places, even the incident at the concert in Las Vegas? These things actually happen quite often actually. People need to be able to defend themselves.

Chevy: I still don't think people should carry guns because they could accidentally shoot someone. We should still wait for the police to arrive so they can solve the problem.

Godwin: But the police didn't stop the shooter until it was too late. The average response time for police across America is 10 minutes. That's a lot of time considering what is going on. Why would a police be any better than a citizen?

Chevy: I really don't think just any person with no training could take down a guy with an assault rifle.  I feel like it would just cause more victims. The normal assault rifle has 30 bullets to shoot, and I know all those bullets won't hit your target and they could hit other things.  

Godwin: I see but you have to keep in mind that we would train them, I agree that nobody without training should be in public with a gun, but that won't be the case. Haven't you heard of training?

Chevy: I suppose that if they were trained then it wouldn't be any worse than police plus they would be right at the seen. When I think about it I think that a bystander who has the proper trainer is good to have a firearm because a person committing a crime wouldn't suspect it which also adds the element of surprise to the table which is definitely an advantage.

Godwin: There are multiple examples of people with guns saving lives such as the Jeanne Assam who killed a gunman that was attempting to shoot into a crowd of thousands exiting a church. This would have been an event the size of the Florida shooting but nobody heard because someone with a gun stopped the shooter. Did you ever hear that story?

Chevy: Wow I never heard that story, I guess there really are people that have guns for the right reason. I guess you've been right all along and guns in the right hands really can save lives.

Godwin: Thanks for talking to me Chevy! I have to go catch a plane, to England! Thanks for talking to me today and I hope you take my words and apply them to your everyday life.

Chevy: No problem Godwin I really appreciate you helping to explain your point of view to me. I really look at this topic differently and I hope that I could use your technique with other people. I really learned a lot from this discussion.

In conclusion I learned about how a gadfly operates in a dialog and how he or she tires to convince you of the other opinion by solid facts supported by evidence. I thought this AP was pretty interesting I kind of enjoyed being opposed to people having guns which is a side I usually don't take but I kind of went into the mind of someone who feels that they are unsafe and bad.

I am studying colon cancer for my disease class.Colon cancer runs in my family, there is a trend of people having it. Through this, I have learned how this disease affects a whole line of people I know and how it is genetically passed down over time. I will go over in this research paper how it affects the person, from their physical health to their daily life. Also I will go over its treatment and how prevalent it is in the population.

People who eat a lot of gluten and salt and have other unhealthy diet choices have a higher chance of getting it but is is also a genetic disease so you would have to have it in your blood line. Stress physical and mental, like anxiety can bring it on.  Also African- Americans have a greater chance of getting it. Colon cancer is not transmissible because it is genetic and passed down. It is a multifactorial disease because it is genetic but environmental factors trigger it. This is a polygenic diseases. This disease affects the colon and large intestine which is in the digestive system. It also affects the immune/lymphatic system. You get stomach ulcers in your large intestine, maldigestion and chronic diarrhea. It affects their daily life by restricting their diet, and their daily activity they have very little energy and must rest a lot because of the diaraha they have to limit their activity and where they can go. Extreme cases involve surgically removing the colon and rerouting the body waste into a colostomy bag. This is very disruptive to every part of a person's life and work. My patient only had ulcerative colitis and it didn’t progress to cancer she is on daily drugs for the rest of her life and has a 1 in 8 chance of having the gene for cancer but hopefully would prevent this. The daily use of mercaptopurine suppresses the immune system and makes the patient more susceptible to other diseases.              

Before we go over the  interview, I want to inform you a bit about colon cancer. Some symptoms are bloody stool, diarrhea,stomach pain,and extreme loss of energy. Some words that you should know are colonoscopies, sigmoidoscope, mercaptopurine and, Crohn's disease. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, especially the colon and it is associated with ulcers or polyps in the stomach. Mercaptopurine medication is used for cancer and autoimmune diseases - specifically it is used to treat lymphocytic leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia also Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. Sigmoidoscopic is an examination of the sigmoid colon by means of a flexible tube inserted through the anus. A colonoscopy is a procedure in which a flexible fiber-optic instrument is inserted through the anus in order to examine the colon. It finds pre-cancerous polyps so they can be removed.

I interviewed a person who has experience with this disease, she had ulcerative colitis and all the symptoms that would point to cancer. She has a close family member that has the disease and had to get a colostomy. Her grandfather died from it.  Some things this person said was, it is inconvenient and you have to be careful what you eat but you can manage it. This disease happens in a greater degree in the Eastern Hemisphere where they eat salty foods and eat soy which has a lot of salt which may contribute to the disease. It seems to be present in the UK where they eat a lot of meat. “My grandfather and aunt had it, I have a 1 in 8 chance of having it”. You can learn to change your lifestyle to be healthy and not to be a worrier and be careful about diet. Pay attention to your gut. If you’re in a flare, huge loss of energy and pains in gut. It can't be prevented but it can be managed through colonoscopies, diet, and an anti cancer drug. You can see how this affects the daily life of a “normal” person. I really think that it would be difficult emotionally to know that you have a disease like that in your bloodline and just have to hope that you don't get it. knowing it's like a 1 in 8 chance given my genetic history. Also, I think it would be difficult to watch what you eat all the time because if you want a quick snack you have to make sure it won’t causes issues with your system.
